Asato Tsuzuki is a shinigami since 70 years back. He took suicide at the age of 26 after have spent 8 years in coma. He had not eaten or slept during the 8 years but still survived. He survived thanks to his demonic blood that run through his veins. It took him three tries before his wish for death was granted. He was under the care of Muraki's grandfather during his coma. It is through the journals, that Muraki's grandfather wrote, that Muraki gets to know Tsuzuki's healing abilities.. Tsuzuki had a traumatic childhood and that was the reason for his actions.

Tsuzuki is a sweet, kind man that just loves sweets. He is the strongest shinigami there is and he has 12 shikigamis (creatures that he can summon) at his disposal. That makes him even more powerful. The only thing that reminds him of his suicide is three slash scars on his right wrist. To cover these up, he bears a wrist watch over them. His amethyst coloured eyes gives away his demonic side, even though that side is never shown in the series.

Tsuzuki had three partnes before Hisoka:

Kobayashi: who transferred.

Asuka Masaki: Tsuzuki's second partner that tried to hinder Tsuzuki from doing his job. He was powerful but couldn't stand being a shingami and resigned. He continued to study in the living world.

Tatsumi Seiichiro: was Tsuzuki's parter for three months before eding their partnership. He says that it was because Tsuzuki was to much of an idiot but many think it's because he truly likes Tsuzuki.

The one who gave Tsuzuki his voice was Miki Shin'ichirou (Male).

Kurosaki Hisoka has only been a shinigami for a short while. His death was caused by a mysterious illness that no doctor could cure, and thus Hisoka died a painful death at the age of 16. The 'illness' proved later on to be a curse placed on him by the evil doctor Muraki, after he had raped Hisoka for witnessing a woman being killed by him. Muraki then erased Hisoka's memories of that night.

Hisoka is the youngest of the shinigamis. He has an ability to read others emotions and thoughts and that aren't really pleasant for him. The psychic ability isn't Hisoka's only power. Hisoka is trying to learn magic to become as powerful as Tsuzuki is. Hisoka isn't a social type. During his childhood, Hisoka's parents locked him up because they were afraid of his powers. His anti social style makes him look rude and uncaring, but later in the series he starts to open himself to Tsuzuki. The only reason Hisoka became a shinigami is to find the one who killed him (Muraki).

The one who gave Hisoka his voice is Asano Mayumi (Female).

Muraki Kazutaka is the evil one in the series. He works as a doctor in the hospital of Tokyo. The reason of his evil ways are his childhood. When Muraki was born, his father had another son on the side with his mistress. When Muraki entered his teens, he met his half brother Saki, who had been brought by their father to live with them. After trying to get along with his half brother, his parents died. Muraki suspected Saki for murdering his parents, and when Saki was about to kill him his suspicions were confirmed. Saki was killed by one of the servants in the house and that left Muraki alive with the urge to get revenge on his brother. He kept his half brother's head and became a doctor, in hope that he could bring Saki back.

Muraki has the looks of an angel. Everyone that he meets feels save in his presence, but Muraki can stab anyone that turned their back on him. He is a serial killer and later in the series it turns out that he is killing for a reason. He kills to bring Tsuzuki to him. He is obsessed with Tsuzuki and does anything to lure him closer to himself. Muraki has the desire to bring his brother back and to do that he needs Tsuzuki. Muraki has a demonic right eye that gives him the power to awaken the dead and summon demons.In the manga, Tsuzuki cuts the false eye out in the 'King of swords' arc.

It is never mentioned in the anime, but Muraki has a fiancée called Ukyou.

The one who gives Muraki his voice is Hayami Sho (Male). He also gave The Earl and Watson their voices.

Watari Yutaka is the scientist in the series. He is a caring person who loves to invent stuff. He loves computers and truly loves challenges of different types. He has a pet owl named 003 on his shoulder. His responsibility as a shinigami is to look over the area: Kyoto.

The one that gives Watari his voice is Seki Toshihiko (Male). He as also given Duo Maxwell from Gundam Wing his voice.

Tatsumi Seiichiro is the secretary of EnMaCho. He and Tsuzuki worked together for three months before they split and Hisoka was paired up with Tsuzuki. Tatsumi has the ability to control shadows and isn't afraid to use his powers if danger crosses his path. Tatsumi is the one that is responsible for the shinigami's economics and is known to not waste a dime if it's not necessary. He is kind, but sometimes he looks scary when Tsuzuki question his orders.

The one who gave Tatsumi his voice is Morikawa Toshiyuki (Male).
